These are songs I worked on during the first days of the COVID-19 pandemic, with most of the heavy lifting done as part of a “May Challenge” leading up to my 33rd birthday/Memorial Day weekend, after which George Floyd’s death jolted me into a different focus.

There is no shortage of music that explicitly or implicitly addresses COVID-19. In the future, hearing it will be as strange and niche as those YouTubers opening decades-old canned goods. I doubt people will be clamoring to listen to it in the days – which are coming – when things become significantly more normal, at least in the sense of crowded ballgames and sweaty basement concerts, and a world where “the mask everyone wears” goes back to being a metaphor.

But I think it’s better for a handful of people to hear songs than for nobody to hear them.
